A PROJECT TO ADVANCE ARTISTIC COLLABORATION BETWEEN GENERATIONS (OCTOBER 2002 – JUNE 2003 / MUSEUM PLATTE)
In Autumn 2002 Pastor Leumund and I decided to combine and realize our previously
separate common ideals under the battle cry of “Forever Both” from Cabaret Voltaire.
We contacted the authorities for old peoples homes in Zürich where the idea for a
generation bridging art project could be done and were immediately given the names
of 3 different old people’s homes.
In the Oberstrasse and Kluspark homes we brought
a grammaphone and records with us and to the interview and discussed questions like
“What is art and who decides what it is?” and “What differentiates modern art from
what has gone before and why?” In spite of this we could not actually convince the
assembled inhabitants that it would make sense to work together with young artists for
common ideas to develop and realise staged photographs. Our third presentation took
us to the studio in the Bürgerasyl-Pfrundhaus where the leader/director, Jacqueline de
Ridder mustered interested seniors. Ruth von Fischer, whose tapestries had created
quite a furore at the 1964 state fair in Lausanne suggested creating a scene in a hat
shop after August Macke.
Within a few days using glue, cardboard and some props
we had turned the conference room into a twenties style hat shop. However for the
production the female pensioners wanted a male model to purchase a hat. Hannes, the
charming young gitarrist in the Berliner Swingband “Hot Synchopators” who were then
living in Plattenstrasse spontaneously offered to fulfil their wish. The ladies visited the
Museum Platte twice with the home’s shuttle bus for a tour and afternoon coffee in the
lounge and listened there to young piano virtuosos. Following the vernissage when the
results of the project were presented the “Hot Synchopators“ played at a tea dance
in the Bürgerasyl-Pfrundhauses’ dining room.
We recognised the lost potential of
exchange between the generations in a society increasingly divided by age and intend
again to organise age bridging events and projects in a artistic context.

GLETTISELI & KLUB G ́STÖRT (ZÜRICH, 2000)
After the eviction from Glacégarten, Mickry 3 and I moved into a studio in the Luwa. As always, I set up a salon and held occasional smallish events. Soon the space became
too small, and just before New Years 2000 Ingo, Mickrys and I decided to grab hold of a little townhouse near the Triemlispital.
The small run-down villa in the Kellerweg, with
serious mold infestation and the distinctive mansard roof in form of an iron („Glettiseli“—small iron) were instantly converted into a walk-in art installation, which we used for
the next three months as a meeting place, showroom and venue for concerts and performances.As the size of the house did not allow for larger events, in February of 2000 we all
moved into the Uetlibergstrasse 99.
This building was previously used as a regular tenement and was located in the middle of a residential district. We connected two four-room
flats on the ground floor by breaking a few walls, then we stuffed the windows with mattresses in order to make the place soundproof. A highlight of this project was the concert
hall sprayed by Mickry 3, which became an important meeting venue for young musicians from the hip-hop scene. On weekends many young rappers in various formations made
their debut here. Quite of few of them are well-known today—and not merely throughout Switzerland.

STUDIO LUWA (ZÜRICH, 2000-2001)
After I returned to Zürich from Copenhagen I lived in a house in Gemeimeriweg, Albisrieden with my art friends Ingo Giezendanner, Susan Walder and Eva von Wartburg. It was
small, cold and as drug addicts had lived there for several years it was accordingly worn out. The old Luwa AG building stood at the end of the street and we seized the opportunity to
rent half a storey there. I built my salon in the front part of the 300 sq. m. space and the remainder we divided by cladding the iron supports with paper which gave the whole place
a sort of Japanese flair.
It was here that during the next two years I constructed small and large cybernetic objects from scrap, latex and washing machine parts. And every Thursday
I organised a little party where the conspiratorial meetings zur Besetzung des Klub gestörts that led to founding Egocity.

SALON ADESSO (GENOA & COPENHAGEN 1997-8)
In the autumn of ‘96 I accepted a studio scholarship in Genoa from
the city of Zurich, which I won with the help of Ingo Giezendanner for
a loveless slipshod mural in the Helmhaus. My natural predisposition for the Mediterranean way of life in a medieval city full of empty
buildings made me wonder how I could live after the scholarship ran
out. I promised the youth hostel a mural, which I skillfully dragged
out for as long as possible in order to stay there for free. I was finally
given the boot after a kerosene stove exploded in my room during a
house party. For the next six months I lodged in an anarchist library,
which was nestled in a virtually unused Renaissance palace.
Eventually I managed to bribe an official of the Italian State Rail-
ways with a Märklin model locomotive and became a proud resident
of the ramshackle railway viaduct arch, costing me 75 francs per
month. Here I finally opened the Adesso salon together with Anne
Bennike, who invited her gang of fellow Danish artists and musici-
ans to hold group exhibitions, concerts and happenings.
The events
were, however, poorly attended. The Italians thought the salon was
either an antique shop or a brothel. It didn’t take long before we had
trouble with the vice squad and then with the anti-sectarian police
unit. Rumors of dirt-cheap groundfloor commercial spaces in the
train station area of Copenhagen lured us to Denmark in spring of
‚98. Within a week we found a three-room shop with large windows
in the Valdemarsgade, where we were able to reopen the salon Ades-
so. We lived in a pantry without any residence agreement and annexed the basement for illegal parties.
This time artists, mostly from
Zurich, were invited to partake in the Gesamtkunstwerk installations
we were erecting in the storefront‘s rooms. Here originated, among
other things, the walk-in automatic shadow theater operated by a
handcrafted interface made of washing-machine cam switches. In
fall of ‚98 our xenophobic neighbors and the fact that I was the only
one from the 4-person collective who hadn‘t killed himself or ended
up in a mental hospital forced me to tie a ribbon on the Copenhagen
experiment and return to Zurich.
